LLM brand monitoring vs social listening: what each one watches
The short answer
Social listening collects public posts, articles and reviews that contain your brand's name. LLM brand monitoring asks AI engines buyer questions, then records whether each answer names you and which pages it cites as sources.
What is the difference between LLM brand monitoring and social listening?
They collect different things. Social listening collects public posts, articles and reviews that contain your brand's name; LLM brand monitoring asks AI engines the questions a buyer would ask and records the answers, including which pages each answer lists as its sources. The first tells you who wrote about you. The second tells you what an assistant said when someone asked it to choose, and whose pages it leaned on to say it.
That second part, the sources, is a layer the mention feeds described on the pages we read do not show; on Brand24's pages it belongs to a second product, Chatbeat. In our research run of 4 September 2026, ChatGPT and Perplexity pooled, 24 brands in four B2B software categories, brands were named in 45.0% of 240 brand-answer pairs and their own site was among the answer's sources in 30.0%, as published in named but not cited after a re-count on 23 September 2026.
What does social listening watch, in the vendors' own words?
Posts, articles and reviews that contain a keyword you choose, collected from the public web and social networks. We read the pages of two listening vendors on 25 September 2026, Brand24 and Mention, and quote each on its own terms.
Brand24's home page, marked as modified on 23 September 2026 in its structured data, describes Brand24 as an AI social listening tool and offers "access to mentions across social media, news, blogs, videos, forums, podcasts, reviews, and more", from "25 million online sources, tracked in real-time". The source list on that page names X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Spotify, LinkedIn, Reddit, Telegram, TripAdvisor, the App Store and TikTok.
Mention, whose home page carries the line "Agorapulse has acquired Mention", defines the unit on its Monitor page, modified 18 August 2025 per its structured data, historical: "A mention is any reference to your specified keywords, phrases, or topics that appears on the Internet, including social media, news sites, blogs, forums, and more." Its help article on sources, dated 25 August 2026 on the page, a date its structured data gives as last modified, lists what it can keyword-crawl: Twitter, forums, Reddit, blogs, videos, news, web, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. The same article says that "in general" Mention "will only crawl a webpage once, when it's originally published".
What does LLM brand monitoring watch?
LLM brand monitoring watches answers: a set of buyer questions is put to AI engines, and each answer is scored for whether it names your brand and which pages it cites. The unit is an answer the engine writes to a question put to it, not a page someone published.
Our own audit asks four engines, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, 40 buyer prompts each, per our post on which engines we check, as updated 23 September 2026. The prompts are generated from your category and the competitors you name, each is asked once per engine per UTC day, and four brands are scored per run, you and up to three competitors, all our own rules as read on 19 September 2026 in that post. For each engine we report the share of its answers that named or cited you, as read on 19 September 2026 in the same post.
Chatbeat, whose footer names Brand24 Global Inc. and which Brand24's home page lists under Product, describes its version on chatbeat.com, read 25 September 2026: "Track your brand's visibility, position, and sentiment across AI Models", with a feature called "Key sources analysis" to "Identify the exact sources shaping AI answers". Brand24's AI Visibility page, marked as modified 10 September 2026 in its structured data, says Chatbeat runs the prompts you define "across major LLMs" and reports "average positioning, Brand Score, key citing sources, AI share of voice".
| Tool and page | Page date; age | What it says it watches, in its own words | The unit it collects | AI answers or their sources on this page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brand24, home page | 23 Sep 2026 per structured data; current | "mentions across social media, news, blogs, videos, forums, podcasts, reviews, and more"; "25 million online sources" | A mention: a public item containing the keyword | No; the page links an AI Visibility page and Chatbeat |
| Brand24, features page | 22 Jun 2026 per structured data; historical | Under "LLM Listening": "Measure your brand's visibility across 9 top AI models"; "Discover top sources shaping AI-generated answers" | An AI answer to a tracked prompt | Yes; nine engines listed, after a sentence naming "seven leading AI chatbots" |
| Brand24, AI Visibility page | 10 Sep 2026 per structured data; current | "track two things: the online mentions that may shape AI answers and the AI answers your customers actually see" | Both, as two products: Brand24 for mentions, Chatbeat for answers | Yes; "key citing sources", "citation share" |
| Chatbeat, home page | No date on the page | "Track your brand's visibility, position, and sentiment across AI Models" | An AI answer to a tracked prompt | Yes; "Key sources analysis" |

What does the citation layer show that a mention count does not?
It shows that being named and being used as a source are separate outcomes, which the mention feeds described on the pages we read on 25 September 2026 do not separate, because what they collect is a post, not an answer. In our run of 4 September 2026, two engines pooled, 37 of the 240 brand-answer pairs named the brand without citing its site, and 1 cited the site without naming the brand, per named but not cited.
In 25 of the 37 named-only pairs a rival's site was cited: the same answer cited a measured competitor's own site, in the same run. One example from that post: an answer from Perplexity to a fleet-software prompt on 4 September 2026 named Samsara and listed twenty sources, none of them on samsara.com.
Where the answers went instead is where listening and monitoring touch. In the 21 answers of 4 September 2026 that named a measured brand without citing its site, reddit.com was among the sources in 11, forbes.com in 7, and a review site such as G2 or Capterra in 7, per the same post. Reddit, news and review sites are on the source lists of both listening vendors above. Whether those Reddit threads named the brand, we do not know: the post says we hold the addresses the engines returned and have not opened them.
Does a social listening tool see AI answers?
Not on the Mention pages we read, and on Brand24's pages through a second product. None of the five Mention pages we read on 25 September 2026 mentions ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, LLMs, chatbots or AI answers, in the page text as served or as rendered in a browser; its Monitor page offers a "Daily AI-generated summary of your mentions", which by its own wording summarises the mention feed; the page does not say it records what an AI engine answered.
Brand24's own page separates the two. Its AI Visibility page says: "To monitor AI visibility effectively, track two things: the online mentions that may shape AI answers and the AI answers your customers actually see. Brand24 helps you monitor brand mentions across the web. Chatbeat shows how your brand appears in AI answers, which sources influence them, and where competitors show up instead." Its features page, marked as modified 22 June 2026 in its structured data and so historical, carries an "LLM Listening" section marked "Powered by" a logo that, rendered, reads chatbeat (our reading of an image); the section lists nine engines under a sentence that says "seven leading AI chatbots".
Do you need both?
Only if you need both answers: they answer different questions. Social listening answers what people published about you and where; LLM brand monitoring answers whether an assistant names you when a buyer asks it to choose, and whose pages it cites when it does. Brand24's own page, quoted above, recommends tracking both.
We have no measurement of which one moves revenue, and named but not cited says the same: what a mention or a citation does for you afterwards, we cannot measure. What LLM brand monitoring as we run it does not see or count, per our post on which engines we check: it does not see the Google AI Overview a signed-in buyer sees, as of 23 September 2026, and it does not count any brand the engine named that you did not ask us to score, which stays in the stored answer text, as read on 19 September 2026.
How was this read?
Every vendor page named here was fetched on 25 September 2026 between 00:58 and 00:59 UTC with curl and a Chrome user-agent and read in full. Before any statement about what a page does not say, the five Mention pages and three Brand24 pages were also rendered in a headless Chrome between 01:06 and 03:16 UTC and searched for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, LLM, chatbot, AI answer, AI search, generative and citation; on Mention's pages that search found nothing, as the pages open. No page answered with a bot check. We fetched the home pages of Talkwalker, Brandwatch, Meltwater and Awario and did not read them, so this post says nothing about them; we did not read Mention's pricing page, blog or other help articles either.
The 45.0% and 30.0% are from our research run of 4 September 2026, two engines pooled, not from an audit and not per engine. Everything this post says about our own system comes from our own systems, as described in named but not cited for the research run and in our post on which engines we check for the audit, and you cannot check it from here; every vendor sentence carries its page and the day it was read, and you can.
Common questions
What is LLM brand monitoring?
Asking AI engines the questions a buyer would ask, on a schedule, and recording for each answer whether it names your brand and which web pages it lists as sources. Brand24's AI Visibility page, which names Chatbeat for AI answers, describes it, read 25 September 2026, as Chatbeat running the prompts you define "across major LLMs" and reporting positioning, "key citing sources" and share of voice. Our own audit stores whether you were named or cited, per our post on which engines we check, as read on 19 September 2026.
Is LLM brand monitoring the same as social listening?
No. On the pages read 25 September 2026, Brand24's and Mention's mention feeds collect posts, articles and reviews that contain your name, from social networks, news, blogs, forums and review sites; Brand24 tracks AI answers through a second product, Chatbeat. LLM brand monitoring collects answers an AI engine writes to a question, so it can see which sources the answer used, which the mention feeds on those pages do not show. In our run of 4 September 2026, two engines pooled, 45.0% of 240 brand-answer pairs named the brand and 30.0% cited its site.
Can Brand24 track ChatGPT?
Brand24's own pages, read 25 September 2026, say yes, through Chatbeat: its AI Visibility page says Chatbeat tracks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, DeepSeek, Grok and Copilot, and its features page, historical (modified 22 June 2026 per its structured data), lists the same nine under "LLM Listening". We have not used either product, so this is what the pages say, not what we tested.
Does Mention track AI answers?
Not on the five Mention pages we read on 25 September 2026: its home page, its Monitor, social media listening and media monitoring pages, and its help article on sources. None of them mentions ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, LLMs, chatbots or AI answers, in the page text as served or as rendered. The sources its help article, dated 25 August 2026, lists are Twitter, forums, Reddit, blogs, videos, news, web, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. We did not read its pricing page, blog or other help articles.
These are our numbers. Yours are one audit away.
Two kinds of tool, described from their own pages with the day each was read, and one measured example with its date. Everything this post says about our own system comes from our post on which engines we check, as it read on 23 September 2026, for the audit, and from named but not cited for the research run of 4 September 2026, and you cannot check it from here; every vendor sentence carries its page and date, and you can. If what you want watched is the answer rather than the post — whether a buyer's question to an AI engine names you, and whose pages it cites, you against up to three competitors you name, per our own rules as read on 19 September 2026 — that is what HeardOf does.
